Welcome to my sports blog!

Today, I am going to be introducing myself, and setting the stage for what I plan on writing in my blog.

Hello, everyone! My name is Morgan Ingwersen, and I am so excited to be writing my first blog post! I am currently a first year at Mount Mercy University, and I am loving it here. In my life, I have two main things that I enjoy, writing and sports. Seems only natural that I combine my two loves into a profession for my future.

In this blog, I plan to use both of my favorite things, to help me jumpstart my dream of becoming a sports news reporter. I would love to be able to be out on the field or court talking to players and coaches about the games. I want to start off small at a local news station and work myself up to bigger sports networking.

Enough about me, I am so excited to start this blog over my view of sports, and voicing my opinion on not just one sport, but all sorts of sports. There is no limit to my love for sports, well, maybe hockey.

So excited to start this journey doing my two favorite things! Stay tuned for future blog posts on sports!

COVID-19 is affecting college sports

COVID-19 is causing a cancelation of all spring sporting events, causing seniors to forfeit their last season.

As I mentioned in my About Me post awhile back, I go to Mount Mercy University. Mount Mercy, as some people might know, is an NAIA division. The decision did not come easily for the NAIA to cancel all spring sports but wanting to keep the safety of the athletes and coaches was the most important. NAIA was kind enough to grant two additional semester terms of attendance and eligibility to all athletes, but for those graduating this spring, it doesn’t really make a difference.

Being a college athlete, it was not an easy thing to hear that our spring season of track was cancelled. I think the worst part of hearing those words was knowing that the seniors, some of my closest friends, will not be able to compete in their last track season ever. Having that last season, the one you knew you had, stripped away is an emotional thing for any athlete.

NAIA is not the only division being affected in this growing state of emergency, the NCAA called off the 2020 winter and spring championships due to this outbreak. March Madness was even cancelled (more like March Sadness if you tell me).

Point being COVID-19 is robbing so many students of the joy they feel participating in their sports. I truly feel so terrible for all the college seniors that have gotten stripped from their sport, their pride and their joy. Guess all anyone can do now is hope this pandemic gets under control before the 2020 fall season.

Top three teams to make the 2020 World Series

Thinking of this fall’s World Series within the minds of all the MLB teams and fans—well, maybe some of them don’t have a chance— I am going to focus on my top three favorites (including an underdog) to win the 2020 World Series, and I’ll tell you why.

The New York Yankees (opened +600, down to +300) are my number one pick to win the World Series. New York has made a huge offseason slash. They were able to acquire pitcher Gerrit Cole back in December during the winter meetings. Cole started for Houston last year, posting a 20-5 record with a 2.50 ERA and 326 strikeouts. He will lead the Yankee rotation this season.

The Los Angeles Dodgers (opened +600, down to +350) despite missing out on most converted free agents, the Dodgers are my second chalk to win the Series. Their offense should be better with the addition of Mookie Betts. Betts has a .301 career batting average and 29 home runs in the last four seasons. Although the Dodgers have been a favorite for many years to win the Series, the 2020 season might be their year. Chicago had a busy offseason

Finally, the Chicago White Sox (opened +6000, down to +4000) are my underdog pick for the 2020 Series, what is a championship without one? Chicago collected three free agents: SP Dallas Keuchel, C Yasmani Grandal and 1B Edwin Encarnacion. OF Nomar Mazara was acquired in a trade with Texas. Their win total is set at 83.5, well above their 72 wins last season. I believe the AL Central will be the weakest in the MLB division.

2020 NCAA Tournament Predictions

As we count down the days until March Madness, I am going to put out my top 10 2020 NCAA predictions for next month. Just note, I currently have no track record, just a big sports fanatic.

10. Vernon Carey Jr. will be the leading scorer in the 2020 NCAA tournament.

9. San Diego State will remain undefeated coming into the tournament.

8. Three teams in the Big 10 will make the Sweet 16, with only one advancing to the Elite Eight.

7. One of the No.1 seeds will lose in the first round of March Madness.

6. Villanova will lose in the Round of 32 for the fifth time in the last seven years.

5. By the end of the first weekend, someone will score a game-winning buzzer beater.

4. Michigan will win as many games in the NCAA tournament as Michigan State.

3. The champion of the tournament will either feature a coach who has never won a national title, or will be a first-time winner.

2. In the second weekend, we will see an ACC vs. ACC matchup.

1. BYU will be the school with a first-year head coach that advances the furthest.
